Graeme Smith became the South Africa captain on 16 March 2003 following the Proteas' World Cup debacle and has never looked back. Smith, who was born on 1 February 1981 in Johannesburg, and only made his Test and ODI debuts in 2002 has taken to the role of South African captain like a duck to water.
By the admission of his peers, Smith is mature beyond his years and has an excellent cricket brain. Aside from fronting a new era in South African cricket, Smith is a more than capable left hand opening batsman, illustrated by his accumulation of over 700 runs in the 2003 Test series against England. Smith’s Test average hovers just under fifty and he has already hit a massive 277, to go with 12 further centuries.
In the One-day game the Proteas skipper has made six centuries and 32 half-centuries and his ODI average is just under 40.
Smith is a world class opening batsman and is seemingly capable of becoming a great captain given the results and attitude of his charges in the last year.
